Babasının yaveri olan Mustafa Kemal Paşa'nın evlilik talebini kabul etmedi, adetlere ve hanedanın özel hayatını düzenleyen kurallara da isyan ederek kendisinden dört yaş küçük kuzeni Şehzade Ömer Faruk ile aşk evliliği yaptı.İstanbul işgal altındaydı. Milli Mücadele'ye katılmak için Mustafa Kemal Paşa'ya karı koca birlikte başvurdular. Ankara'ya gitmek istediler, kabul edilmedi.Cumhuriyet ilan edildikten sonra hanedan sürgüne gönderildi. Onları bekleyen vatansız, unvansız ve maddi sıkıntılarla dolu bir hayat oldu. Fransa'da ve Mısır'da yaşadılar. Güzellikleri ve zarafetleriyle dünyaya nam salacak üç kızları oldu,beş de torunları.Sürgünden yirmi yedi yıl sonra Sabiha, boşanmış bir kadın olarak ülkesine döndü.
