The boxes have soft tops and bottoms and covered board sides. I have found them very good for what I need them for but would not use them for heavy items. -

Answer: The cover is soft. They are really good quality and zip around the top. -

Are the walls rigid even when the box is empty?
Answer: Yes, although the sides and the top are a soft material. The boxes keep their shape when empty.
